Whether you’re traveling on your own or on a cruise, you always need to exercise caution and be safe. So to help keep first-time or newer cruisers safe, here are some cruise port safety tips below. First, it’s important to know that port towns and cities typically make a lot of money off of tourists and the cruise industry. But, not all ports are created equal, some are more notorious for petty crime and tourist scams, and some are known for being more tourist friendly.
If you’re looking to explore the ports independently, here are some port safety tips to help you maximize your day and stay safe.
Research Tips
Research the port
Before you go on your cruise make sure you’re familiar with the cruise ports. Some ports are safer than others, some are located a long distance from the ship and some have scams to be aware of. If you research the port in advance you can learn about things to do and see, and how to get around safely.
Learn common travel scams of your destination
No matter where you’re cruising, it’s important to research any common scams before you get there. This can help you avoid losing money, being taken advantage of, or simply give you information you can pass along to help others stay safe in cruise ports as you travel.
Valuables & Money Tips
Don’t bring lots of money
When you leave the ship, don’t take large sums of cash with you. Try to hide your money and spread it out through your wallet, purse/bag and pockets. This way if something were to happen (say your purse gets stolen) you may still have some cash on you.
Leave valuables in your cabin safe
Don’t bring flashy jewelry, clothing, purses or electronics with you. These items will attract unwanted attention. Leave all valuables in your cabin safe, or better yet – don’t bring them with you at all if you can avoid it.
Common Sense Tips
Don’t go by yourself
If you’re leaving the ship, don’t go alone! Explore the port with a spouse, partner, family member, friend, or fellow cruiser. Remember, safety in numbers!
Stay in populated areas
Don’t venture off the beaten path or out of the populated areas of the cruise port. If you’re on an organized tour or know that the port is safe, then feel free to explore at your leisure. Some ports are more dangerous and have a higher degree of crime. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times!
Only take cabs or ride-shares with people you know/trust
All I have to say about this one is watch the movie “Taken”. We don’t all have dads like Liam Neeson who can come and rescue us if things go wrong.
Make smart choices
This one should be common sense, but I’ve learned that common sense isn’t really that common these days. Don’t over indulge in alcoholic beverages, be careful with your money, don’t venture too far from the ship, make sure you only log-in to trusted WiFi sources etc. You’re on vacation, but that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down.
