Have you heard of airplane beach? Maho Beach in St. Maarten is a famous beach for plane-spotters, beach goers, and tourists alike. Located across the road from Princess Juliana International Airport, this beach sees multiple planes fly in and take-off over the beach each day. Some of the planes fly so low over the beach it almost feels like you could reach out and touch them.
Sonesta Maho Beach Resort
We stayed at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort in Feburary, 2020 – before the world went into lockdown and COVID cancelled travel for me… probably the rest of the year. While we were at the resort we had great views of the beach not only from the resort grounds, but also from our hotel room. I liked to watch the crowds gather and stand in front of the fence as the large jumbo jets took off. It created chaos all over the beach with people, sand, and belongings flying everywhere. It was also fun to watch the crowd waiting for the jumbo jets to land to capture that epic photo.
My Experience
Watching these activities from the hotel piqued my interest and I had to go experience this for myself. My husband and I walked from our resort to the Maho Beach to experience some of the planes flying overhead. We even got to experience a few of the jumbo jets taking off! And, let me tell you as fun as it was to stand there and watch – that sand stung. Here’s a compilation of planes landing and taking-off at the beach.
So, would you visit the famous Maho Beach to experience the planes taking off and landing? Would you be daring (or crazy) enough to stand on the beach when the jumbo jets take off? I wasn’t brave enough and don’t think I’d ever be after witnessing the chaos!
