Inside Cabins: Norwegian vs Royal Caribbean

by The Average Tourist

Ever wondered what an inside cabin looks like on a cruise ship? Well there are lots to choose from, and they differ between ships, cruise lines, and cabin classes. We’ve stayed in a few inside cabins on Royal Caribbean (Freedom of the Seas and Rhapsody of the Seas) and Norwegian (Norwegian Jade) and have to say, they aren’t as bad as they sound!

I’m not an expert cruiser, but I have also stayed in an ocean view room on Princess Cruise Lines (Caribbean Princess) and a balcony room with Norwegian (Norwegian Jade), so I do have something to compare to. When I get asked if inside cabins compare to balcony cabins my answer is: you can’t compare the two. There are very different reasons for choosing one cabin type over the other, and it doesn’t necessarily have to do with cost (though, it is definitely something to consider). Here are quick tours of two different inside cabins, and reasons for why you may like to chose an inside cabin.

Reasons to choose an inside cabin:

  1. You don’t plan on being in your room very much, aside from sleeping and getting ready.
  2. You’d prefer to spend your time exploring the ship and using the amenities.
  3. You like dark rooms for sleeping.
  4. You want to save money; inside cabins are usually a fraction of the cost of balcony cabins.
  5. If you are prone to seasickness, inside cabins located on lower decks and in the middle of the ship can help reduce the feeling of motion.

Royal Caribbean Inside Cabin – Freedom of the Seas

Norwegian Inside Cabin – Norwegian Jade

Differences between Royal & Norwegian

Royal Caribbean – Freedom/Rhapsody of the SeasNorwegian Cruise Lines – Norwegian Jade
– Room was larger in square feet
– Sitting area with loveseat and coffee table
– 2 night tables
– Long desk/dressing table with chair, mirror & shelves
– Small shower – generally small bathroom
– Decent sized closet with shelves and safe

Overall: Liked how big the room was (for a small room).
Enjoyed having the seating area.
– Room was smaller in square feet
– No sitting area
– 2 night tables
– Small corner dressing table with stool, mirror & shelves
– Larger shower – generally small bathroom
– Decent sized closet with shelves and safe

Overall: Didn’t like how small the room was. Would have
liked a sitting area and a chair instead of a stool.

I always thought the only advantage of an inside cabin was the cost. I like sleeping in a dark room so that would be another advantage I never thought about before. Your cabin on Royal Caribbean looked surprisingly spacious too!

It was actually very comfortable and I didn’t mind not having the window or balcony.
